Title: Farsighted Pdf How We Make the Decisions That Matter the Most
Author: Steven Johnson
Published Date: 2018
Page: 256

Praise for Farsighted: “Riveting... As a deep thinker and gifted storyteller, Johnson is the right author to tackle the topic. He’s at his best when analyzing impossibly complex decisions... One of Johnson’s thought-provoking points is that [people who excel at long-term thinking] read novels, which are ideal exercises in mental time travel and empathy. I think he’s right.”—The New York Times Book Review “Johnson is explicitly focused on real-life decisions that (ideally) involve serious deliberation... [He]reminds us that, fundamentally, choices concern competing narratives, and we’re likely to make better choices if we have richer stories, with more fleshed-out characters, a more nuanced understanding of motives, and a deeper appreciation of how decisions are likely to reverberate and resound.” —The Wall Street Journal “Johnson is well-placed to dig into these dilemmas of decision-making, as he gracefully serves up examples ranging from 17th-century urban planning to contemporary artificial intelligence.” —Financial Times “[An] excellent book... altogether insightful.” —Brain Pickings  “An anecdote-packed, insight-laden exploration of what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to our most complex decisions, Johnson’s latest book makes a convincing case for adding more storytelling to the C-suite and beyond.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Johnson is a succinct, colorful, and skillful writer, and this book is one of those rare works that is highly relevant to the daily functioning of just about everybody.” —Publishers Weekly Praise for Steven Johnson: “Mr. Johnson’s erudition can be quite gobsmacking.” —The Wall Street Journal “A great science writer.” —Bill Clinton, speaking at the 2013 Clinton Foundation Health Matters conference “A first-rate storyteller.” —The New York Times “A maven of the history of ideas.” —The Guardian “Steven Johnson’s mind works in wondrous ways.” —Seattle Post-Intelligencer “[An] excellent book… altogether insightful.” Steven Johnson is the bestselling author of eleven books, including Where Good Ideas Come From, Wonderland, and The Ghost Map. He's the host and co-creator of the Emmy-winning PBS/BBC series How We Got To Now, and the host of the podcast American Innovations. He lives in Brooklyn and Marin County, California with his wife and three sons.

The hardest choices are also the most consequential. So why do we know so little about how to get them right?

Big, life-altering decisions matter so much more than the decisions we make every day, and they're also the most difficult: where to live, whom to marry, what to believe, whether to start a company, how to end a war. There's no one-size-fits-all approach for addressing these kinds of conundrums.

Steven Johnson's classic Where Good Ideas Come From inspired creative people all over the world with new ways of thinking about innovation. In Farsighted, he uncovers powerful tools for honing the important skill of complex decision-making. While you can't model a once-in-a-lifetime choice, you can model the deliberative tactics of expert decision-makers. These experts aren't just the master strategists running major companies or negotiating high-level diplomacy. They're the novelists who draw out the complexity of their characters' inner lives, the city officials who secure long-term water supplies, and the scientists who reckon with future challenges most of us haven't even imagined. The smartest decision-makers don't go with their guts. Their success relies on having a future-oriented approach and the ability to consider all their options in a creative, productive way.

Through compelling stories that reveal surprising insights, Johnson explains how we can most effectively approach the choices that can chart the course of a life, an organization, or a civilization. Farsighted will help you imagine your possible futures and appreciate the subtle intelligence of the choices that shaped our broader social history.

Nothing new This book was recommended by The Economist as offering new insights. The book is a pleasant and entertaining read by anecdotes, but fails to offer new or even deeper insights for sound farsighted decision makng. Of course, I am writing this living in the Netherlands which has quite a good track record of sound farsighted policy decision making in the public sphere and is home to e.g. Shell, known for its scenario planning and Philips Electronics known for technological forecasting. The book does not offer anything new, it is a rumination of aspects and dimensions all well known in decision theory. The role of futurological thinking is touched upon, but lacks elaboration. The book touches upon the role of ideology in farsightedness, that is what society do we want ultimately, and what is underlying the success of CEOs successful in long term sustainable value creation, but it is not elaborated. As the philosopher Popper wrote, decisions pertain to facts, but are decided by values, could have been emphasized stronger. Missing in the book are the tools for making decisions in complex situations, abstract thinking, reconceptualizing based on a high conceptual complexity and thus defining new models, although the book touches on the latter. The book deals with making complex decisions, which is something different from making decisions in complex situations, but fails to mention Herbert Simon’s insight that what are perceived to be complex problems in the first place results from lack of sufficient broad knowledge.Covers old ground in a vastly better, more colorful, personalized way. Surprisingly good. Covers the same ground as many other decisions books, but in a deeper fashion, with more meaty examples. As you read, you come across advice that you say to yourself “I have to remember that”. And that, and that. Very instructive. It’s filled with examples of situations where thinking about the consequences of decisions would have made for vastly better outcomes. Insightful. The story about the detailed scenarios planning that went behind the BinLaden raid, that led to its success, is amazing. The San Francisco -- Brooklyn Perspective Three is an average rating: Four or five stars for the quality of the writing; one or two stars for the myopic vision on the topic. As others have pointed out, there is little here that is new if you have been making even a cursory attempt to keep up with the advances in decision-making theory over the past two decades. Some of the examples are excellent, but the author may be limiting himself to the Bay Area/ New York City enclaves in which he is most comfortable and that seems to be skewing his perspective. Insinuating that the pro-life position is limited to old men, for example, and ignoring both young and female abortion opponents because they don't fit within his viewfinder. In this the author seems to be a victim of his own thesis -- holding tightly to a single point of view rather than expanding his horizon.

Title: Hate You Less Pdf
The prick left without saying a word.
Took my virginity and broke my heart in one fell swoop.
Now we're reunited, and stuck in a damn blizzard.

He was my best friend’s older brother.
The hot jock every girl wanted.
But that doesn’t excuse his assholeness.

He better keep that charming smile to himself.
You know the smile.
The one that makes panties melt into thin air.
My mission: Make it through my bestie’s wedding with my panties still intact.

I still hate him.
And love him.
What do they call that? Oh yeah.
Insanity.

Ok This was an okay mediocre book. The story was Okay. There was romance and suspense to the story. I just felt it was Okay.A Very Nice Read On really enjoyed this second chance romance. Rick and Annie had a rough beginning. High school love is hard. Trying to fix what broke is even harder. Watching these two battle to the end was very enjoyable. Well done.Rick is a... Rick is a...Well, let's just say, it was hard for me to like him or to want Annie to end up with him.He ghosted on her for no reason. He was never contrite about it.Annie and Rick are back in town for his sister Jess' wedding. They were together in high school until he literally ran away.I did like that Annie had a bit of backbone and some gumption, but she still falls right back in and never asks why he left her, ran away from her like a coward. Not until the very end and then its all ok.I voluntarily reviewed this book.

Age of Swords Free Pdf

ISBN: 110196538X
Title: Age of Swords Pdf Book Two of The Legends of the First Empire

Praise for Michael J. Sullivan   “If you enjoy epic fantasy, and are perhaps hungering for something with timeless appeal, then I highly recommend picking up Age of Myth.”—The BiblioSanctum, on Age of Myth   “Hair-raising escapes, flashy sword fights, and faithful friendship complete the formula for good old-fashioned escapist fun.”—Publishers Weekly, on Theft of Swords   “Filled with adventure and clever dialogue and featuring a pair of not-quite-heroes whose loyalties to each other provide them with their greatest strength, this epic fantasy showcases the arrival of a master storyteller.”—Library Journal, on Theft of Swords   “With less gore and a smaller cast of characters than George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire but equally satisfying, Sullivan’s epic fantasy will be gaining fans at exponential rates.”—Library Journal, on The Rose and the Thorn Michael J. Sullivan opened the first door to his imagination with typewriter keys found in a friend’s basement when he was just eight years old. Today he uses computer keys, writing classic fantasy with unlikely heroes, including the bestselling Riyria novels and his latest epic, The Legends of the First Empire.

The gods have been proven mortal and new heroes will arise as the battle continues in the sequel to Age of Myth—from the author of the Riyria Revelations and Riyria Chronicles series.

In Age of Myth, fantasy master Michael J. Sullivan launched readers on an epic journey of magic and adventure, heroism and betrayal, love and loss. Now the thrilling saga continues as the human uprising is threatened by powerful enemies from without—and bitter rivalries from within.

Raithe, the God Killer, may have started the rebellion by killing a Fhrey, but long-standing enmities dividing the Rhunes make it all but impossible to unite against the common foe. And even if the clans can join forces, how will they defeat an enemy whose magical prowess renders them indistinguishable from gods?

The answer lies across the sea in a faraway land populated by a reclusive and dour race who feel nothing but disdain for both Fhrey and mankind. With time running out, Persephone leads the gifted young seer Suri, the Fhrey sorceress Arion, and a small band of misfits in a desperate search for aid—a quest that will take them into the darkest depths of Elan. There, an ancient adversary waits, as fearsome as it is deadly.

Magic, fantasy, and mythology collide in Michael J. Sullivan’s Legends of the First Empire series:

AGE OF MYTH • AGE OF SWORDS • AGE OF WAR

Read any other book by Sullivan I'm glad this isn't the first book that I've read by this author, because I'd never have read another. I've enjoyed all his other books that I've read. The Grrl Power team writing was annoying. While individually each member was interesting, the outcomes were straight up ridiculous. It got to the point one could predict what would happen next taking merely by the gender of the person. It the character was male they are cowardly, idiotic scum and if they are female they were paragons of all that is noble in humankind. The one exception was a cripple who was pathetic. I've met golden retrievers who have a stronger sense of self. His codependency was to the point of mental illness; somehow the story warped this into nobility. The ode by Raithe to Per at the end was completely out of character. Not as jarring as Cuba Gooding, Jr at the end of Instinct, but it was getting there. The discovery process was beyond belief.1. It was ludicrous that the pottery wheel was invented prior to the cart, but ok.2. The bow is invented, perfected, and utilized to kill the bad guy(s) in a few days time.3. There is trading contact between dwarves who have steel, sails, barrels, and the like, but no cross-pollination of ideas. There is no way the idea of a wheel wouldn't have made it through on the off chance that the humans had never seen a log. A log from the forest. That they lived in. Logs that they used for a palisade.4. At the pace that these benighted and enlightened inventors set for discovery, one can expect they will have warp drive somewhere around the middle of the next book.5. Seriously though, what primitive tribe has alloys in their metal working, but doesn't have bows or slings? The technological path was entirely nonsensical. This book felt like the author wanting to make political statements rather than tell an interesting story.as I enjoyed Age of Myth I was excited for this book to come out, as I enjoyed Age of Myth, but this is amateur YA drivel. When Roan invented the wheel is when the eye-rolling started, and continued through Brin inventing written language the same week, and Roan doubling back and inventing archery a few days later. I'm fine with strong female characters, but this was Mary-Suing all over the place. Add to that all the men are chest-thumpingly stupid and incompetent, and you wind up with this ham-fisted turd of a book. Don't waste your $14.99.Mary Sue to the Max! I stopped reading when I came upon this beautiful line " Although men were strong like rocks, any stone could crack. Women were more like water. They nurtured life and could shape the hardest granite through unrelenting determination." This author tricked me. He starts off in the first book with some interesting characters and even though he neglects the male characters through most of the first book I thought maybe they would take more of a center role along with the female leads. Nope. They are tools to push plot or show stupidity or greed or some other such nonsense. Most of the book their just slaves to their romantic feelings towards other women. The male whos background is grounded as a warrior was my favorite from the first and he is to me now a loser. He gos from being in control in the first book to being so wishy washy that a child can sway him from a decision he makes. The females are responsible for every thing you could think of. They are inventors, grand wizards, warriors. You name it they do it. Gets to a point where I am wondering why there are any problems in this world. Then I remember its run by men.I don't understand how this author writes. The first book felt well written while this feels lazy and just hits tropes that I would expect in some lazy b movie drama. If the third book is on sale for three bucks ill buy and read it but at this point that book is fifteen dollars and the way this author writes it isn't deserved.

A New York Times Bestseller
Winner of the James Beard Award for General Cooking and the IACP Cookbook of the Year Award

"The one book you must have, no matter what you’re planning to cook or where your skill level falls."―New York Times Book Review

Ever wondered how to pan-fry a steak with a charred crust and an interior that's perfectly medium-rare from edge to edge when you cut into it? How to make homemade mac 'n' cheese that is as satisfyingly gooey and velvety-smooth as the blue box stuff, but far tastier? How to roast a succulent, moist turkey (forget about brining!)―and use a foolproof method that works every time?

As Serious Eats's culinary nerd-in-residence, J. Kenji López-Alt has pondered all these questions and more. In The Food Lab, Kenji focuses on the science behind beloved American dishes, delving into the interactions between heat, energy, and molecules that create great food. Kenji shows that often, conventional methods don’t work that well, and home cooks can achieve far better results using new―but simple―techniques. In hundreds of easy-to-make recipes with over 1,000 full-color images, you will find out how to make foolproof Hollandaise sauce in just two minutes, how to transform one simple tomato sauce into a half dozen dishes, how to make the crispiest, creamiest potato casserole ever conceived, and much more.

Over 1000 color photographs

I was going back and forth on 4 or 5 stars for this book I've been reading Kenji's column since it started, and have learned so much and made so many of his recipes. So, I know they work. I know his recipes are excellent and that he's someone you can trust implicitly to have a great version of a dish. And this book is great, and beautiful, full of photos, his great sense of humor, and excellent instructions. The thing is, I was slightly disappointed that it is very much more of an all-American, sort of new, scientific, Joy of Cooking. Some of my favorite articles from Serious Eats involve Kenji's Asian, Mexican, and vegetarian/vegan recipes. Now he did include some of his vegan work, and his wonderful chile verde is in here, but there are no stir-fries, no tacos, and his absolutely stellar kale salad with crispy chickpeas was passed in favor of two others which are excellent, but really, that salad is AMAZING. Or his black bean burger, which is the absolute best black bean burger on the planet. But whatever, that's not the point. I was just hoping to see more of that type of food, whereas this book is targeted towards beginners (not to say that experienced cooks can't get value out of this book, because it's full of great info) or more specifically, towards people who haven't been reading his column all this time.Having said all that, I have to review the book on its own merits and how could I possibly give such a stellar tome anything but 5 stars?! There is no fault to be found with the information provided or how engaging it is to read. Even the quality of the book, with lovely binding meant to last and meant to make the book truly a workhorse that doesn't just look pretty sitting on a coffee table is worth commending!I'll just have to wait for future books to cover the things I miss from this book. Though in the meanwhile, there are already recipes I've got bookmarked to try out, like his puttanesca, pot roast, oven fries, THAT MEATLOAF, not to mention his excellent egg salad, which I've previously made from the site…I'm so glad to be able to pay Kenji back in some form for the years of free content on Serious Eats and I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cooking and improving their skills, in particular beginner cooks. But really, go check out his column on Serious Eats, too. ;) His pie dough, chocolate chip cookies, fish tacos, crispy chicken with white beans and chile verde, chop suey, fried avocado tacos, and his vegan experience (CRISPY TOFU) recipes (AND MORE) are all remarkable!

The Secret Free Pdf

ISBN: B000LC3JX2
Title: The Secret Pdf
It has been passed down through the ages, highly coveted, hidden, lost, stolen, and bought for vast sums of money. Fragments of this Great Secret have been found in the oral traditions, in literature, in religions and philosophies throughout the centuries. It has been understood by some of the most prominent people in history: Plato, Galileo, Beethoven, Edison, Carnegie, and Einstein, along with other renowned inventors, theologians, scientists, and great thinkers.

For the first time, all the pieces of the Secret come together in an incredible revelation that will be life transforming for all who experience it.

In this audiobook you will discover the Secret, and you will learn how to have, do, or be anything you want. You will learn how to use the Secret in every area of your life. You will hear from modern-day teachers - men and women who have used the Secret to achieve health, prosperity, relationships, and happiness. They share their incredible stories of using the Secret to eradicate disease, acquire massive wealth, overcome obstacles, and achieve what many would regard as impossible. Through them, you will begin to understand the hidden, untapped power that is within you, and the true magnificence that awaits you.

DID not think i would like it and i do i find myself staying on tract and being happier can't say i was happy with this because i thought it was a book and I am Christian and I believe Christ wants us to better oursselves and this is basically to help get you into a better place mentally and physically and spiritually. I am keeping it. I saw a review and the woman slammed this and i read thesecond day and it says to have gratitude to shift your energy and you will see miracles take place commit to writting down 100 things a day. WOW it really does help.Greed gets a mystical makeover O watched the film version on Netflix and thought the book would delve more deeply into the law of attraction. Turns out the entire franchise is nothing more than a brilliant marketing campaign. I will definitely give them that. After the book, all I was left with was the sad realization that the Law of attraction really is just that: a mystical makeover for greed. If you just concentrate hard enough in the shiny material things you want, they'll magically and effortlessly gravitate to you... Somehow!Try it. What do you have to lose? When I first began to read this book I honestly thought it was a crock and a waste of my time and money. I started with an expectation of what I thought the book was about and the style of writing that I should expect. When I initially disagreed with one of the authors viewpoint with in the book and scrutinized another's personal life through research I was almost stop reading, but I decided to continue reading anyway. I made a wise decision to.I had heard about the law of attraction before, but never took the time to investigate what it truly meant. As the book unraveled and began to reveal "The Secret," and how to apply it into my life immediately, I allowed myself to be open in receiving whatever insight I could in order to help me overcome several difficulties in my life and achieve a better quality of life overall.By the middle of the book I chose to practice some of the techniques that were briefly described through the text just to try it out. For the past 3 weeks I have had pain in the middle of my back. I had even recently gone to a chiropractor to help alleviate my symptoms, which only worked temporarily. The moment I tried the technique of closing my eyes, clearly my mind, and speaking affirmations of confidence and healing something changed. I did not realize the pain in the middle of my pain, which I had been experiencing for weeks, was gone until about 5-10 minutes later when I stopped to stretch. I am not a blogger, I do not receive free books, or any type of compensation for this or any review I ever write. I also am usually one to dispel instant claims of miraculous effects occurring just from reading a text or saying a chant, so when I tell you my pain left and has not been back since I am shocked in a way. I still am secretly wondering when the pain will reappear, but by the continuation of applying the law I highly doubt it will. From that moment I figured if it's that easy then I wonder what life will be like once I apply it to every area of my life.By the end of the book and my own personal testament, I was hooked. This is a life changing book and I see why it has sold millions and millions of copies around the world. It really works if you apply and believe. After previewing The Power and The Magic, I intend to read those two as well. This has easily become one of my all-time favorite books and I highly recommend it. Just try it. What do you have to lose?
