Beautiful, inspirational--storytelling at its best I want to start by saying that I am a woman of faith but have become ever so weary (and wary) of the wave of "christian" fiction that has been released in droves the past few years. Most of it is either trite, formulaic, unoriginal, preachy, etc.It has become a big deal for me when I find an inspirational book (because ultimately that is what a "christian" book should do--inspire people) that is beautifully written and properly edited.The Prayer Box is all that and ever so much more. I was pulled into the world Ms. Wingate created right from the start. I WANTED to be in Tandi's world and was truly hoping against hope that she could be the person she always hoped she would be.The way Iola's story was told filled me with such love and admiration for her as a person and real sorrow for the wounds and injustices inflicted upon her. I was inspired by her simple and heartfelt letters to her beloved father. I was moved and inspired by her selfless acts of love and concern for the very people and community that shunned (and even reviled) her. Thinking on her beautiful spirit and lonely, anonymous death broke my heart. I wonder how many Iola's I have missed--we all have missed--in our busy, insulated, unmindful lives?This book was a rare treat and I am ever so grateful for the author's gift of storytelling. I didn't want the book to end because I felt so very connected to the entire cast of characters. There are people whose redemption is still in the future--what is to come of them? I so hope there will be more books from the outer banks and Ms. Wingate. It's a real joy to have loved every page of this book and been inspired AND challenged by so many of them. I have printed several excerpts from the book and put them in my journal to reflect on as they speak to where I am in life's voyage.I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this story.Long-Ago Prayers Change a Contemporary Mom's Life Tandi Reese needs a hiding place, but she never expected it to come in the form of Iola Anne Poole's rambling mansion on the Outer Banks. Yet when tasked with cleaning out Iola's house after the older woman dies, Tandi discovers a story that will lead her to stability, faith, and new hope.Tandi is a complex and engaging protagonist and narrator. Much like a real person, there are things to like about her, such as her intelligence and resilience, and things you hope will change, such as her hands-off parenting and tendency to glom onto men who do anything but appreciate and love her. Perhaps that's why it's so gratifying to see her form a sisterhood with the Seashell Shop women, get to know Paul Chastain, and build a life on Hatteras after the definition of a troubled life.Iola, for her part, is a compelling deuterotagonist. In fact, she made me wish Lisa Wingate wrote historical fiction, because her story is just as interesting as Tandi's. Her prayer box letters are touching and filled with deep faith, despite her own travails, such as being banished to a convent school for her mixed-race heritage. Because Iola's part of the novel is epistolary and not as consistent as Tandi's, I felt like I missed out on getting to know this character, but it wasn't a turn-off because the historical and contemporary stories mesh together well.Lisa rounds out her story with other well-drawn characters such as Paul, a man who doesn't fit the stereotype of a romantic hero but is the kind of guy Tandi needs, and Zoey, a daughter who is deciding whether to follow her mom's path or believe she can be and do better. Finally, I like that the Christian element of The Prayer Box, while present, is not overpowering. You can safely presume Tandi will find faith, but her journey feels authentic, not clichéd. Saying the Sinner's Prayer and going to church, Lisa hints, won't fix everything for Tandi. What will, is finding God--and Christ in Him--and believing who He says she is and always was. I love how Iola, through her prayer box, had an opportunity to teach Tandi this.

Craziness I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I love this story because I love the characters and the description of Evergreen. Valentina is a fierce and bold character and I like that she does not back down. Even if the Knight going from one extreme to another. I like her friend Sofia who is her guide to how the school works. She gets a little attention from the Knights. The Knights are Ryder, Maverick, Jaxson, and Erza. Only for the night at a Masquerade Ball that she heard yelling and goes to help. She was somewhere she was not supposed be and seen something she was not supposed to see. Then appeared the Joker card. She was MARKED. That changed everything and everyone that she knew turned on her.When Pushed Down She Always Gets Back UP!!! Love this new bully book! Marked takes us to Evergreen Academy where there is a hierarchy, and don't you dare try to move from your place!!!!Valentina is new to Evergreen and comes in in the middle of the semester after school started. This triggers lots of questions, and comments from the student who have been there since the beginning. Being a new girl at a new school is hard enough, but coming in when no other students have been allowed in after the school started in years is unheard of. All eyes, ears, and mouths are on Valentina and what she brings to the school. The four hottest guys turn eyes toward her, and the The Diamonds are not happy.There are lots of mysterious happenings going on with who elects the Knights, and everyone local seems to know about the Spades. The bullying in this books gets intense when she becomes Marked, and loses any friends she had previously made. The end of the book leaves us on a minor cliff hanger as she decides she wants to come back to school to get her revenge. There are many questions, and mysteries that I can't wait to read about!This series is a quick release with books coming about every couple of weeks.Elite society, a secret, love interest(s), make this story so intriguing. I rarely put the book down and that was only to do things that were necessary..bathroom breaks, cooking. I just didn't want to. Val is such a strong character even when faced with bullying, betrayals, and other obstacles. Everyone in this book shows a mask, that occasionally show a crack to their real self. Balloon Juice I finally decided to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had purchased it some time ago and recently determined that now was the time to read this self-help classic. What a COLOSSAL disappointment! I am amazed that this mediocrity is so popular. I found it to be little more than 1980s managerial balloon juice.From “paradigm shift,” to “think Win/Win,” to (ugh) “synergy,” there is no empty self-help cliché left unturned. I should have stopped reading the first time I saw the word “synergy.” (I get countless “business proposals” in my email every day and, if I bother to skim any of them at all, I delete them as soon as the word “synergy” makes an appearance.) No word represents the trite emptiness of this book better than “synergy” – except maybe the verb form of the word: “synergize,” or the adjective “synergistic,” or the adverb “synergistically.” But they are all here. (The author also repeatedly refers to “things that are learned” as “learnings.”)The book doesn’t even try to live up to its title. There is no argument at all to support the idea that these are seven actual habits that real people have used anywhere in the world to achieve real success. In fact, these seven so-called habits appear to be nothing more than seven things that the author thinks are really good ideas, with weird examples of how they helped him deal with his kid being bad at baseball and also helped his kid learn the value of cleaning up the yard. The book’s title doesn’t match the book itself, but then no one would spend their money on a book called, “The Seven Things Some Random Guy Thinks are Really Nifty-Keen.”Here’s some useful self-help/time management advice for you: do not waste your precious time with this book. There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of better self-help books out there. Synergize your win/win paradigm shifts with some of those.This book will change the way you look at life. This is, hands down, one of the best and most powerful books I've ever read in my life. I have recommended it to countless people. The fact that you're seeking it out says volumes about your level of self-awareness as it is and this book builds on that. Very seldom do books really make me get involved when I read them, but this book made me break out my highlighter and notepad. There was so much good stuff I just had to take notes I could quickly reference. You know how some books make you say things out loud? You'll read something and say, "YES! EXACTLY!" or read something profound and just sit dumbfounded, going "Wow," and you have to take a moment to reflect on it? This book is full of moments like that.There is a lot of practical stuff in here, too. Challenges for you. Ways you can start to shift your thinking by taking an emotional inventory of your life and what you're doing/feeling every day. Just writing about it makes me want to go back and read it again. If you're here looking for a book that will help you harness that little spark inside of you that's saying, "You can be better" then this book is it. You're not an animal. Life doesn't condition you like a dog. This book is about the untouchable part of your human spirit that no one besides you controls. This book is about carrying sunny weather with you where ever you go, learning how much a proactive attitude benefits you, and really how sad and wasteful it is to walk through life allowing things to ruin your day. Things don't ruin your day. YOU ruin your day. You are always in control.Seriously, read this book. You won't regret it.

You Need to Buy Additional Books, CD's and Pay for Classes to Make This System Potentially Work. Honestly confused how a new published book can get this many positive reviews in such a short time. I did not do any of the exercises yet, and it still took me over 3 weeks to finish it.There are couple of things that bother me. Yes the meditations are explained but not fully. You need to buy all these different CD's or download them to get the full picture. He also tries to convince his readers to take his classes, and even better if you take 3 classes. Also to benefit from the Meditation CD's he mentions, you also need to buy his previous book "Breaking the Habit of being Yourself". And guess what? When you go over the suggested chapters 9-13, you realize that you better pay for additional Meditation CD's. Barbara calculated speed, trajectory, combustion, and other factors for rocket and propellant development, and she set the tone for future projects.As the work grew, and young JPL expanded, the number of women "computers" (they computed! By degree a mechanical engineer, I wrote and ran computer code (on punch cards) to determine heat loads on the rockets and their payloads. I remember the engineering challenges of correctly modeling laminar and turbulent air flows over payload cover structures and how much I enjoyed the work. It was a short career - I was tempted away by a High Temperature Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor - but my most vivid memories will always be my first job out of college on the Atlas (work horse of the century) and Centaur launch vehicles.A TEN STAR BOOK I would give it 10 stars if I could. This is a FANTASTIC book - Very readable and enjoyable - I have no doubt if it were not for these ladies, we'd still be thinking the world was flat! Anyone with a student in a STEM program should get this book for them - to realize that there was life before "electronic computers". I have purchased copies for family and recommended it to bunches of people. You will be astonished when you read it, then you'll want to read it again.
