Beautiful adult coloring book with a wide variety of interpreted designs Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you.Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the books and/or TV series, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.I really like this book. What is different about this one from others that I have is that six different artist have contributed to the designs. It makes for a variety of coloring opportunities. Some designs are simple – almost child-like. I can color those as-is or put some of my doodling/art skills to work and add some unique elements to the designs. Others are moderately challenging and will be good ones to work on when I simply want to color. Finally, there are designs with a lot of intricate and small detail. They can be colored, but it will be a challenge and one that I will enjoy because these designs are so beautiful.Physically, the book is very well made. The designs are printed on one side with details from the books written on the back of the page. The pages are thick and white; however, they are not perforated. The binding is glued rather than sewn, so removing pages from the book will be a little more difficult. Most of the designs merge into the binding, but the portions that might be lost if I cut the pages out are not the central theme of the design.None of my gel pens bled through to the back of the page. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper. My water-based markers did not leak through; however, my ultra-fine Sharpies and Copics did. In any case, I would recommend putting a waste sheet of some sort (chipboard, freezer paper, cardstock, etc.) under the page you are working on to keep ink from possibly getting on the following pages. In summary, an beautiful coloring book with very different interpretations of the subject by various designers. The book is very well made but could be improved upon if the pages were perforated for easy removal. Some pictures I loved, some I hated This was my first foray into coloring since my children were small and we colored Thomas The Tank Engine together. I'm a huge Outlander fan - have read all the books multiple times, watched the TV series, even have Claire's ring. So I didn't hesitate to order this book. After all, it's years before the next Big Book comes out.The good:- The paper is good quality and only one picture to a page- A couple of the artists seem to be familiar with the story and time period- Some of the pictures are complicated enough to get lost in for hours- Every page has an actual quote from the book to go with the picture- I loved the pictures with herbs, gardens and plantsThe So-So:- A lot of the pictures are too simple (like the boar tusk bracelet)- Some are just poorly drawn (like the prison cell)- How many pictures of Frank's car do we need?- Lallybroch had electric light fixtures outside the house? The Bad:- The Mill Scene - the artist didn't connect the mill, the wheel and the spout to anything- None of the pictures of Jamie and Claire really have them looking in love and happy- In fact nearly all of the people in the book are grim and looking down in apparent misery- The artists didn't really seem to know the story very well and just guessed- Claire's head is cut off in one picture- Jamie in his wedding kilt looked like something a child would draw.- The picture with the ladies in the shop has half-drawn baskets at the bottom - I didn't want to ruin it by trying to draw the rest.So overall, this isn't a terrible waste of money. I do hope they put out more coloring books based on DIA, Drums, etc. and I'll buy them because they keep me happy between books and TV seasons. But I hope they put more thought into the pictures next time. Those of us who would buy this book know the Big Books inside and out and expected better

Expecting Better Pdf

ISBN: 0143125702
Title: Expecting Better Pdf Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong--and What You Really Need to Know
Author: Emily Oster
Published Date: 2014-06-24
Page: 313

Praise for EXPECTING BETTER:   "A revelation for curious mothers-to-be whose doctors fail to lay out the pros and cons of that morning latte, let alone discuss real science. And it makes for valuable homework before those harried ob-gyn appointments, even for lucky patients whose doctors are able to talk about the rationale behind their advice."—New York Times   "A book... that pregnant women won't want to miss."—Parents Magazine“Emily Oster is the non-judgmental girlfriend holding our hand and guiding us through pregnancy and motherhood. She has done the work to get us the hard facts in a soft, understandable way.”—Amy Schumer "Oster's advice cuts through the emotion, myth, fear of malpractice litigation and looks at the numbers. A mother herself, Oster's interest isn't just curiosity, it's the same thing that motivates every new mom... and Oster's ability to break down the data into informed analysis is a refreshing break from the hysterical hearsay that often dominates the conversation.—Babyzone   "Gives moms-to-be a big helping of peace of mind!"—Harvey Karp M.D., bestselling author of The Happiest Baby on the Block   "It took someone as smart as Emily Oster to make it all this simple. She cuts through the thicket of anxiety and received wisdom, and gives us the facts. Expecting Better is both enlightening and calming. It almost makes me want to get pregnant."—Pamela Druckerman, New York Times bestselling author of Bringing Up Bébé  Emily Oster is a professor of economics at Brown University and the author of Cribsheet:A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting, from Birth to Preschool. She was a speaker at the 2007 TED conference and her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Esquire. Oster is married to economist Jesse Shapiro and is also the daughter of two economists. She has two children.

*Newly Revised for 2019*

What to Expect When You're Expecting meets Freakonomics: an award-winning economist disproves standard recommendations about pregnancy to empower women while they're expecting. From the author of Cribsheet, a data-driven decision making guide to the early years of parenting

Pregnancy—unquestionably one of the most profound, meaningful experiences of adulthood—can reduce otherwise intelligent women to, well, babies. Pregnant women are told to avoid cold cuts, sushi, alcohol, and coffee without ever being told why these are forbidden. Rules for prenatal testing are similarly unexplained. Moms-to-be desperately want a resource that empowers them to make their own right choices.

When award-winning economist Emily Oster was a mom-to-be herself, she evaluated the data behind the accepted rules of pregnancy, and discovered that most are often misguided and some are just flat-out wrong. Debunking myths and explaining everything from the real effects of caffeine to the surprising dangers of gardening, Expecting Better is the book for every pregnant woman who wants to enjoy a healthy and relaxed pregnancy—and the occasional glass of wine.

Expecting Better from this Book I was excited to read this book - I bought it online when I found out I was expecting a child. There is a lot of hokum and pseudoscience surrounding pregnancy and health. I wanted a book that would cut through that and give an evidence-based survey of pregnancy-related topics, and hear the scientific community's consensus (as much as they have one) on those topics. However, I was shocked seeing a review on the book talking about the "myth" that alcohol is inadvisable during pregnancy. Certainly the author isn't advising any amount of alcohol is advisable, given the overwhelmingly consensus on the issue from public health advocates?I immediately read the entire alcohol part of the book. I soon learned not only would this book not provide me with the best evidence from health advocacy groups and scientist groups, they would provide evidence that directly contradicted it.The author says it's fine to drink some alcohol during pregnancy, and details how much and why she thinks this. She walks through studies and literature on the topic that she examined. Given that the CDC, the American Pregnancy Association, the World Health Organization, National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, the March of Dimes, and others all agree and firmly say the best advice is to abstain from alcohol completely, I really needed an extraordinary explanation from the author as to why I should ignore those experts. Not surprisingly, I found her analysis underwhelming and unpersuasive, and not worthy of ignoring the consensus shared by experts in the field.Ask yourself, who is a more trusted source? An economist writing a book to a mass audience for profit, or the March of Dimes, the CDC, WHO, American Pregnancy Association, the UK Health Ministry, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome scientists and advocacy groups? Do all those independent groups have a profit motive to give distorted and wrong health advice? And fetal alcohol syndrome is not some one in a million risk that parents shouldn't really worry about. A recent study showed 1% to 5% of kids studied had fetal alcohol syndrome disorder, and it was being chronically under-diagnosed.To be fair, while this has been the consensus for a while, you could find outliers when the author first wrote this book. For example, the UK's health ministry used not advise against very light alcohol use, but they have since examined emerging research on fetal alcohol syndrome disorder (FASD) and they now say the best advice is to abstain completely - joining the consensus among other health groups like CDC, WHO, etc.So has the author been concerned about the emerging evidence since she wrote this book? I saw Dr. Oster was asked about recent studies showing that even light alcohol use was unsafe during pregnancy by a health journalist, and her answer was illuminating. Dr. Oster basically said for those studies she'd want to see them be replicated and more details about the links between behavior and harm. That's fine (we should fund lots of replication studies!), but note when she looked at studies that didn't find a danger for pregnant women to drink moderately - she didn't say "well I'm going to wait to see if these can be replicated and more detail provided" - she took them to the bank and said you can make conclusive decisions about your child's health outcomes based on these studies.I would agree there is not an abundance of studies showing that a tiny amount of alcohol will lead to significant medical risks. But there have also been no similar studies showing that having one cigarette (or two, or three) during your pregnancy is a significant risk. So in this book, does the author similarly suggest smoking a very small amount of tobacco is perfectly acceptable, given the absence of studies? No, she follows the scientific consensus here. Why the double standard? With things that pose a serious risk to children (like lead paint), we may not ever know exactly where the line is between what is harmless and what will irreversibly harm a child. When the activity is something that is avoidable, the scientific community generally urges avoiding it entirely.I'm sure Dr. Oster is well-intentioned, but this is a book about health written for profit to a popular audience, and even in the best circumstances that is a fraught situation. There is a profitable market for people with academic credibility to sell a message that, while it goes against the consensus of the public health community, it's something many people want to hear. I hope the book gets updated with the many advances in our understanding of FASD, or at least explains why they have a double standard on very light tobacco use.My #1 go-to pregnancy book! Does not treat you like an idiot. It's a pity this book got caught up in a kerfluffle about alcohol, when that is about 1% of the books actual content (I've put *exactly* what the author says about it at the bottom of the review for all those negative reviewers who couldn't be bothered reading the actual book!).This book was hands down the most useful pregnancy book I read, not because it tells you what to do, but because it calmly presents the data on every major decision you'll need to make during pregnancy, and then encourages you to form your *own* opinions based on it, instead of treating you like an idiot who can't be trusted to understand anything other than black-and-white 'rules'. As the author says:"I teach my students that making good decisions requires two things. First, the right data. Second, the way to weigh the plusses and minuses of the decision *to you personally*...So naturally, when I did get pregnant I thought this is how pregnancy decision making would work too. Take something like amniocentesis. I thought my doctor would outline the plusses and minuses...She'd give me the data I needed. She'd then sit back, and my husband and I would discuss it and we'd come to a decision that worked for us. This is not what it was like *at all*".Every pregnant woman knows this feeling. This book has the missing data that thinking parents need to help them make many of those decisions, including:- What *really* happens to your odds of conception after 35?- What is the evidence that having a cup of coffee will harm your baby? or 2 cups? 3 cups? Why is there so much conflicting advice on this?- Same for alcohol, by trimester- What is the likelihood of miscarriage each week? (I found this super reassuring)- What is the statistical likelihood of issues arising from eating deli meats, eggs, fish, shellfish, soft cheeses, and sushi? How do you weigh up the omega 3 vs mercury risk for fish?- What % of women are still experiencing morning sickness each week? Are your morning sickness symptoms 'worse' than the average woman and how risky are the drugs for it?- What should you know before you make a decision to get antenatal testing for downs syndrome? Does amniocentesis really have a 1 in 200 risk of miscarriage? Is CVS more or less risky than amnio? (We ended up having the non-invasive test, while getting our results the doctor told us 'you seem really well informed on this!'. Thanks Emily :-)- Is emptying the cat litter box as dangerous as gardening?- Exactly how much airplane travel is risky?- What are the real risks (and benefits!) of gaining more weight than the recommended amount?- Is there anything that will help you correctly guess the gender?- What's the evidence on whether Kegels help?- How can I understand the data on which drugs are safe during pregnancy?- What is your chance of a pre-term birth, week by week? And what % of pre-term babies at each week will survive? (also reassuring)- For full term babies, what is the chance of the baby arriving each week, if it didn't come last week? Are there any studies than show symptoms the baby might come soon? Is there anything safe you can do to bring on labor if you are overdue?- What are the risks and benefits of induction? Do you really need to be induced for 'low amniotic fluid'?- How long does the average labor really take?- What, statistically, are the pros and cons of a c-section or an epidural? What about cord-clamping, homebirth, doulas, types of fetal monitoring, episiotomy, and cord blood storage?- An example of an evidence-based birth plan is included, but emphasis given to choosing what works for you.So, in summary, the data need to make your own important decisions along the way. Recommended read!--------Appendix: *Exactly* what this book says about alcohol during pregnancy:"There is no question that very heavy drinking during pregnancy is bad for your baby. Women who report binge drinking during pregnancy are more likely to have children with serious cognitive defects. In one Australian study, women who binged in the second and third trimester were 15 to 20% more likely to have children with language delays than women who didn't drink. This is repeated again and again in other studies. Binge drinking in the first trimester can cause physical deformities and in later trimesters, cognitive problems. If you are binge drinking, stop. However, this does not directly imply that light or occasional drinking is a problem. When I looked at the data, I found no credible evidence that low levels of drinking (a standard glass of wine or so a day) have any impact on your baby's cognitive development"(The author then goes on to review a number of studies in more detail, including an analysis of whether those studies correctly separated causation from correlation).------------I did not read that as a licence to go drinking while pregnant. In fact, I read it and chose not to drink anyway (I was too morning sick to want anything to do with alcohol!). And I respected the author for giving me the evidence, and not blindly repeating something others had said. Here's to being treated with respect when you are pregnant, not like an idiot.

Available Light (Star Trek Pdf

ISBN: 1982113278
Title: Available Light (Star Trek Pdf The Next Generation)
Author: Dayton Ward
Published Date: 2019-04-09
Page: 368

Dayton Ward is the New York Times bestselling author or co-author of nearly forty novels and novellas, often working with his best friend, Kevin Dilmore. His short fiction has appeared in more than twenty anthologies, and he’s written for magazines such as NCO Journal, Kansas City Voices, Famous Monsters of Filmland, Star Trek, and Star Trek Communicator, as well as the websites Tor.com, StarTrek.com, and Syfy.com. A native of Tampa, Florida, he currently lives in Kansas City, Missouri with his wife and two daughters. Visit him on the web at DaytonWard.com.

The past comes back to haunt Captain Jean-Luc Picard in this brand new thriller set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Section 31, the covert organization which has operated without accountability in the shadows for more than two centuries, has been exposed. Throughout the Federation, the rogue group’s agents and leaders are being taken into custody as the sheer scope of its misdeeds comes to light. Now Starfleet Command must decide the consequences for numerous officers caught up in the scandal—including Admirals William Ross, Edward Jellico, Alynna Nechayev, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard who, along with many others, are implicated in the forced removal of a Federation president.

Meanwhile, deep in the distant, unexplored region of space known as the Odyssean Pass, Picard and the crew of the Starship Enterprise must put aside personal feelings and political concerns as they investigate a massive mysterious spacecraft. Adrift for centuries in the void, the ship is vital to the survival of an endangered civilization which has spent generations searching for a world to sustain what remains of its people. Complicating matters is a band of marauders who have their own designs on the ancient ship, with only the Enterprise standing in their way....

Where do we go from here? Any follow up to Section 31: Control was going to be difficult, but this was masterfully executed, I think. The parallels with modern political events are subtle, but in iconic Star Trek fashion, ideals and consequences in real life are given a broader context in the reality of the Federation while granting the reader an exploration into more wonder and the unknown along the way. Here's to hope for more stories on this path.Wooo Great follow up to the other books subsequently preceding this particular novel in the series but also a good prequel to the following written work.ST:TNG new events. Very good story but had an odd secondary story line that didn't conclude, leading me to believe there is a (or going to be) a followup.

Title: Killing the SS Pdf The Hunt for the Worst War Criminals in History (Bill O'Reilly's Killing Series)
Author: Bill O'Reilly
Published Date: 2018-09-18
Page: 304

Bill O'Reilly is a trailblazing TV journalist who has experienced unprecedented success on cable news and in writing fourteen national number-one bestselling nonfiction books. There are currently more than 17 million books in the Killing series in print. He lives in Long Island.Martin Dugard is the New York Times bestselling author of several books of history, among them the Killing series, Into Africa, and The Explorers. He and his wife live in Southern California.

The Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller (October 2018)

Confronting Nazi evil is the subject of the latest installment in the mega-bestselling Killing series

As the true horrors of the Third Reich began to be exposed immediately after World War II, the Nazi war criminals who committed genocide went on the run. A few were swiftly caught, including the notorious SS leader, Heinrich Himmler. Others, however, evaded capture through a sophisticated Nazi organization designed to hide them. Among those war criminals were Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death” who performed hideous medical experiments at Auschwitz; Martin Bormann, Hitler’s brutal personal secretary; Klaus Barbie, the cruel "Butcher of Lyon"; and perhaps the most awful Nazi of all: Adolf Eichmann.

Killing the SS is the epic saga of the espionage and daring waged by self-styled "Nazi hunters." This determined and disparate group included a French husband and wife team, an American lawyer who served in the army on D-Day, a German prosecutor who had signed an oath to the Nazi Party, Israeli Mossad agents, and a death camp survivor. Over decades, these men and women scoured the world, tracking down the SS fugitives and bringing them to justice, which often meant death.

Written in the fast-paced style of the Killing series, Killing the SS will educate and stun the reader.

The final chapter is truly shocking.

Another "Killing" Book As one who has read and enjoyed all of the previous seven "Killing" books, I debated whether to review this one. By now any readers of these books will have already determined whether they like the format or not before they open the book. Those who dislike the former Fox news commentator or somewhat superficial pop-nonfiction will avoid the book. Those who like a book which can be finished in a few days that is filled with "pithy" character-driven prose, and ample maps and photos of the topic covered will not be disappointed. Reading this book or a visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum should be mandatory for those who trivialize the term "Nazi" and thereby dishonor those who fought against them by attempting to attach it to any modern U.S. politician. None of the SS men and women described in this book showed any remorse or guilt for their atrocities and personified the absolute depravity and total evil which was Nazi Germany.Very disappointing I've read two other books O'Reilly has written -Killing England and Killing Patton-both very good and interesting. Killing the SS isn't about the SS, it's about the Jews looking for the SS and basically apparently indiscriminately murdering lots of people along the way, with very little worthwhile information about the SS itself. An Incredible Story The “Killing” series of historical events by authors Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard are fascinating, well-researched back-in-time accounts of different eras. Their most recent release of “Killing the SS”, the hunt for the worst war criminals in history, is simply captivating. For this reader, some of the story was known, and a lot was not. That around 10,000 former Nazi’s were allowed to immigrate to America following the war is mind boggling. And, then there is the role of the Vatican and the Red Cross, who assisted between 8,000-10,000 Nazi’s immigration to South America. The search for Adolf Eichmann in Argentina was especially interesting for this reader, who had walked the streets of Buenos Aires numerous times and could easily see the city of 1960 when the Mossad captured Eichmann and flew him out in the middle of the night.Even after all these years, it is hard to come to grips with the evil that the Nazi’s brought this world. As the authors suggest, one really can not really come to an understanding of these crimes against mankind, until visiting one of the concentration camps, as this reader and his wife did when they visited Dachau on a dark cold snowy December day, that continues to haunt us after seeing the ovens. We pray that God does not forgive these monsters. It was just not the men of the SS who were evil, but also the women guards at female concentration camps like Ravensbruck. One of those women was Elfriede Huth, who following the war immigrated to the United States and lied about her role at Ravensbruck and lived in San Francisco for over 30 years before she was found out and expelled back to Germany. She and other Nazi’s that immigrated to the U.S. and lied about their roles have collected over $20 million from Social Security. Crazy. As with all the “Killing” books, it is essential to have one’s iPad close by, as there is no shortage of googling that needs to be done to uncover additional information about these criminals and events. As usual, great job Mr. O’Reilly & Mr. Dugard!
